(2718.1 Mb)1. Field of the Invention
This invention relates to a method for improving the softness of a polymer, in particular a polyolefin.
2. Description of the Related Art
Polyolefins such as polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polybutylene (PB) or poly-4-methylpent-1-ene (PMP) are widely used in the manufacture of a variety of products such as fibers, films, sheets, molded articles and the like. Generally speaking, polyolefins are produced by slurry, solution, gas-phase and mass polymerization methods. Most of the polyolefins are characterized by the use of high shear mixing in order to produce a molten slurry with a narrow particle size distribution. The slurry is then fed to a high pressure reactor where the slurry is cooled, solidified and fed to a product extruder where the polymer is sheared, optionally heated, and extruded into a sheet, film or fiber. The polymer can also be made by a high pressure process such as a process for injection molding (IM), blow molding (BM), thermoforming, and rotational molding (RIM).
Polyolefins are very tough and rigid plastics and, hence, generally are not suitable for consumer products that require a softer feel. In particular, polyolefins such as polypropylene (PP), polybutylene (PB) or poly-4-methylpent-1-ene (PMP) are utilized to make beverage containers, sacks, and other flexible packaging. The strength of these containers or sacks is necessary to withstand the pressures and forces generated during the filling of the container and during shipping of the filled containers. However, the toughness of the polyolefins causes a less than desirable softness to the containers which diminishes their appeal to consumers and is a problem for the producers.
In the past, attempts have been made to soften polyolefins by adding a polymeric material such as a polymer, e.g., a copolymer, containing a softening monomer, to the polyolefin. U.S. Pat. No. 4,976,982 discloses a blend of an olefin with a polyolefin to reduce the hardness of the polyolefin. U.S. Pat. No. 6,025,488 discloses a modified polyolefin composition having a blend of a modified
